Buenos noches! I’m back in the States after a 6-week stint in Xela, Guatemala and one week up in the mountains studying beneath banana and coffee trees. While I’m already (sorely) missing the tortillas negras (blue corn tortillas, hot off the grill), the piles of pan (white bread and cookies; killer) and the chocolate caliente (best hot cocoa of my life)… I am thrilled to be clanking around in my kitchen again. After testing and tweaking a few recipes, I’ll be posting lickitisplit.
Next on the agenda: something sweet & lemony!
(And perhaps something involving corn… I think I spotted eight ears in the fridge that my family picked up from the market!)

I’m on the eve of a 2-month blogging hiatus. In a few hours I’ll be boarding a plane, zipping southbound to Guatemala. I’ll be spending my summer eating corn tortillas, exploring lakes in the highlands and immersing myself in Guatemalan culture while beefing up my Spanish. My mom promises to experiment with sorbets (and possibly a guest post or two!) in my absence. Wishing you all wonderful summers (and culinary explorations) in the meantime.
P.S. This chocolate sorbet was a dream!

I swear I’m not entirely MIA.
In fact, if you were to shoot me an email any time in the next three days, I’d probably receive it in about 20 seconds. And I’d probably respond within the next minute. (The thesis is due Friday… I live at my computer.)
I have good recipes on the horizon (pumpkin-apple-crumb cake to boot!) and more non-sweet, wintery dishes after that. I’ll be back soon. In the meantime, wishing you all hearty appetites and extra rounds of apple cider.
P.S. If you’re like me, wedges of pumpkin pies are perfectly suited for breakfast. But, if you’re also like me, there wasn’t a crumb left of your pumpkin pie the Friday after Thanksgiving. Here’s a halfway pumpkin-pie-wannabe breakfast that’s getting me (quite happily) through my week: 1/2 cup whole-milk yogurt, 1/4 cup pumpkin puree, pinch nutmeg, pinch cinnamon, 1/2 tablespoon dark honey or maple syrup, granola. (Also highly recommended: put a few dark chocolate chips at the bottom. December merits splurging.)

I have some tasty posts in the making, but I’m currently drowning in plant biology.
My final exam ends at 10am on Friday, halleLUJAH! In the meantime, a brief blog respite. I’ll resume back to normal this weekend!
For a quick preview, next up: my Mom’s special burritos, snowball cookies, and rasberry chocolate oat bars!
